Admin How-To Guide

Enable Single Sign On through Facebook

Facebook Use App button

Facebook pages are used by organizations to highlight product and service awareness and engage clients and users. ChallengeRunner makes it easy for challenge administrators and Facebook page owners to integrate services. By enabling Facebook integration, the admin provides an easy to locate "Use App" button on the Facebook page that, when clicked, will open a new page for the ChallengeRunner platform with the user logged in. The following steps are required to configure Facebook Integration:

How To Enable Facebook Integration with ChallengeRunner

  1. Select the Settings option from under the Organization menu on the Admin page.
  2. The Organization Settings dialog will appear. Click the Facebook Page tab and check the Yes option for Enable Single Sign On from Facebook Tab?
  3. Note the URL next to Url for Facebook Tab: as it will be used on your Facebook page. It will be in format: https://www.challengerunner.com/fbsso/xxx where xxx is your unique group Id.
  4. Click Save.

How to set the Use App button on your Facebook page

  1. Open the your organization Facebook page with admin access.
  2. Under the image in the top center of your Facebook page, Click the + Add a Button link.
  3. The Add a Button to Your Page dialog will appear. Click option Download your app or play your game
  4. Select the Use App option and click Next.
  5. Click Website Link and a second dialog will appear.
  6. Enter the URL created in Step 4 of the How To Enable Facebook Integration with ChallengeRunner section above.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Click Finish.
NOTES:
  • When a visitor to your webpage clicks the Use App button, a new tab will appear on the visitor's browser and will use the email address they used to sign into Facebook as their Id for ChallengeRunner. If a user is registered with that email in ChallengeRunner, they will be logged into the system.
  • By default, if a visitor is not a member of your ChallengeRunner group, they cannot join your challenges through the Facebook interface. This is useful for a closed group where the admin wants to control who joins their challenges. However, in cases such as a community challenge, you may want to grant members and visitors the ability to join challenges without admin intervention.

How to allow open challenge enrollment from Facebook page

  1. Select the Settings option from under the Organization menu on the Admin page.
  2. Once the Organization Settings dialog appears, click the Facebook Page tab.
  3. Select how participants will enroll in new challenges:
    • If only admins should register ChallengeRunner group members into new challenges, leave the default Open enrollment not allowed option selected.
    • If existing ChallengeRunner group members can register for new challenges, select option Only current ChallengeRunner Members may enroll in available challenges.
    • If any visitor to the page can register for new challenges, select option Current ChallengeRunner members and visitors may enroll in available challenges.
  4. Click Save.

How the Facebook authorization process flow works

  1. A visitor to your Facebook page clicks the Use App button.
  2. Facebook checks to see if the user has already authorized it to send the user's email address and name to ChallengeRunner:
    • If so, a new ChallengeRunner page is opened with the user automatically signed in.
    • If not, the user is presented with a Sign In button that, when clicked, will ask the user if they would like to authorize ChallengeRunner to receive their email address and name.
  3. Depending on the Admin's selection in the How to allow open challenge enrollment from Facebook page section above, the user will either be allowed to register for any new challenges or be restricted to only the challenges the Admin has enrolled them into. If the third option was selected in step 3 above, any visitor to your Facebook page will have the option to join your group as well as enroll in any of your available challenges.
